Farm CircleLetter#2

Did you know that pigs have this uncanny ability to sense when we are gone from the farm?

Jesse and I took a couple days off to celebrate our 10th anniversary (crazy!) last week. We went to crown land north of Sudbury a couple of hours where friends of ours knew of some campsites. In the end those were all full and we ended up scouting around to find one we wanted to stay at.

There we tried our hand at earthy, back to basics tent camping. You really should see Jesse in an environment like that! He simply comes alive with chopping down trees and cutting them up for firewood. We had some wood splitting competitions with a brand new Fiskars ax that he had just purchased and pronounced very good.

And the food we ate!! We took basically meat and eggs from our farm: burgers, breakfast sausage, bacon, eggs, even tried some steak over the fire that was amazing! I suppose it's cooking everything over the fire and being in nature that just makes everything taste that much more amazing! We filled up on meat and eggs and ate very little else.

The beauty of camping on crown land is the unfiltered, untouched beauty, being able to camp wherever you want, hearing and seeing wildlife.

The downside of camping on crown land is no cell phone service. For 3 days we were in the bush, unbothered by pinging, ringing phones. And, apparently, also unbothered by the pigs freely roaming our farm.

When we did pack up out of the bush and enter the 'real' world again, when the dust settled and the phones stopped pinging, I read a message that said our pigs had been out since Saturday. That was the end of our trip! Jesse no longer sat comfortably and we headed home as fast as we could.

We had a great trip and we love being farmers but really, was that the best weekend the pigs could have chosen to get out??
